Nothing More American Than Funny Fat Guy T-Shirts

By Quincy Ladd

Considering all of the pain and grief we go through for being fat, why do we continue to let ourselves eat unhealthy food and get fatter every year? America is an overweight country, which not many other countries can boast of these days. People all over the world are dying of starvation, but America's waistline gets bigger every year. Why are we wearing funny fat guy t-shirts and celebrating this awful epidemic? Well, because it really feels good...right?

We all know very well how unhealthy it is to be fat. There is not a day that goes by that doesn't have someone telling us how we will die a young age if we do not lose weight and embrace a life of vegetables and exercise. Well, I am not about that at all. I am more apt to thumb my nose at people like that in favor of wearing my funny fat guy t-shirts and enjoying my life as I see fit. My own personal pursuit of happiness is at a drive-thru window instead of at a gym.

Being in America means you have a 68% chance of being a fat person. Those are pretty terrible odds, but that doesn't mean we have to spend our lives in misery and sadness. Europeans are especially critical of our weight, but who are they to judge us? Every country has its problems. If ours is derived from being too successful, is that such a bad problem to have? I, for one, am more apt to ignore the clamoring of people who live an ocean away and choose to wear a funny fat guy t-shirt and be happy.

America is a prosperous country. We do not suffer from famine, pestilence, or war like other countries do. We may experience an economic downturn every now and again, but in the grand scheme of things we don't have it so bad. We have arable, fertile land that the government actually pays farmers not to grow food because of unnecessary surplus. Funny fat guy t-shirts are a way to embrace the success of America in a unique way. If we have the chance to be an overweight country, well that must mean we're a pretty great country.

I am not trying to give fat people an excuse to be fat. I am trying to let fat people know that it is okay to live a joyous life, despite being fat. If skinny people are going to throw that back in our faces, then let them. We can embrace our gluttony like drunks embrace the drink. We will put on our funny fat guy t-shirts, raise our buckets of fried chicken in a toast, and smile. Life is not quite as bad as Europeans and skinny people would have us believe.
