By Janelle Burnett

As a wannabe cheerleader, you may be harboring the dream of getting into NJ cheerleading championship. Well, if that is the case, then you have your work cut out. You require plenty of practice sessions before the day of actual try-outs comes. Specifically, you want to eliminate the nervous moments that characterize a typical newbie performance.

Make sure that you have talked to the coach before try-outs. This is important because it is the coach who understands what is good for the team. Prior preparation, and not waiting to the actual day of try-outs, is very important. It can be weeks before you are ready for the occasion. Know all the requirements in advance before the actual day.

Talking to your fellow cheerleaders is also very important. This lets you know that it is not just you who is feeling nervous but also other cheerleaders. Get a friend from fellow cheerleaders. You want someone you can talk to and share experience with. You help keep both of you motivated by talking to each other. You can calm your nerves this way.

Enter the practice week. Usually, most teams will perform numerous practice sessions before try-outs. The importance of practice sessions is to enable the coach to teach people important skills for the try-outs. The coach also takes this opportunity to evaluate how good one is with others. As for you, you need to take these sessions as the time to make friends with others.

During the sessions, self-confidence is of vital importance. This is irrespective of whether you are good at it or not. Possessing the right attitude and sportsmanship will be very important at this point. Be more adventurous and open to trying new things.

Now is the day of try-outs. Make sure you have had sufficient sleep time to give you the energy you require to impress the judges. Put on clothes that fit. If you wear oversized shirts, it becomes difficult to see motions. It is also important to be comfortable in whatever outfit you have worn. There is nothing worse than having to tug at your clothing in the course of cheering.

Prior to being called on stage to perform, inhale deeply three times. During the breathing in, convince yourself that you are up to the task. When getting to the floor, be very enthusiastic. Create an impression in the judges to the effect that you are up to it. Also, put on a natural smile. A fake smile will be easily detected. Your main goal is to show judges you are having fun.

Loud and clear voice is of great importance in the actual NJ cheerleading championship. Refrain from chopping or signing your words. They need to be sharp and clear. Make a point to pronounce the Ts and Rs clearly. When performing, use expressions. This way, you will not sound like a robot. Neither the judges nor the audience love monotone voice. Fell free to ask anything if the judges are not clear.
